Unique in its kind, light & extremely stable: the inner tape revolution made of Aerothan

The revolutionary new inner tube of Schwalbe made from Aerothan reaches unprecedented top values in the field of elasticity, weight and leak resistance - and does this entirely without rubber. For racing bikes, MTBs and trekking bikes.

100 grams less weight on the racing bike, leak resistance for extreme touring cyclists or tire pressure around a bar on a mountain bike without increasing the risk of leaking: what sounds tempting is now reality thanks to the new thermoplastic polyurethane called Aerothan. With the Aerothan tube, cyclists and tourists can push the boundaries of their possibilities further than ever. Aerothan tubes are much more robust and more resistant than butyl, latex or other plastic inner tubes.

The transparent Arothan-Tube that weighs only 41 grams is thoroughly innovative: For more than five years we have perfected the material in collaboration with BASF to the smallest detail and improved groundbreaking. This is the only way we could combine the apparent contradictions of minimum weight and maximum leak resistance, says Felix Schäfermeier, Schwalbe Product Manager.

The result exceeds all our expectations! The material, a thermoplastic polyester polyurethane, impresses with its excellent physical properties: high resilience, unique tensile strength, excellent damping, extreme heat resistance and maximum wear resistance. And of course the Aerothan tubes are also recyclable.

Aerothan Tube: The new benchmark for low weight and leak resistance

The effects of these properties in the Aerothan Tube are impressively demonstrated by the comparison tests with other models. The plunger test simulates the penetration of a small object, such as granulate. This is exactly what causes many flat tires in practice. Here Aerothan holds up twice as long as other materials: 47 Newton is needed to pierce the Aerothan tube - more than twice as much as with other materials. Even in the Snakebite test with a guillotine, the new inner tube from Schwalbe can handle considerably larger fall heights than butyl, latex or other plastic inner tubes. His heat resistance is also excellent: it has been tested at temperatures of more than 150 ° C at 78 km/h in a specially developed process.

When it comes to weight, Aerothan with its low weight, from 41 grams for racing bikes to 61 grams for all -round drivers up to 81 grams for MTB. In the rolling resistance test, the results correspond to the traditional fast latex interior tubes and tubeless systems.

The extraordinary dimensional stability of the material offers even more benefits. Aerothan inside tires do not burst suddenly, but the air escapes slowly with a defect. Even with extremely low air pressure, the shape and the stability of driving remain stable. This means that leaky tires or burping have less chance. And: the assembly is much easier: the inner tube does not slip and cannot get trapped.

Incomparable driving experience

"Despite the high surface voltage, the reset feature is excellent and ensures a soft and at the same time dynamic and precise driving experience that I have never experienced before," says Felix Schäfermeier, himself a former professional rider, about the incomparable driving experience. The inner tube closes so smoothly and closely on the tire, as if it is part of it.

Like all Schwalbe products, the new inner tube is not only made in the laboratory, but also by thousands of test drives perfected. Prof riders, triathletes, World Cup mountain bikers and world cyclists gave valuable feedback for the developers.

Including Patrick Lange, Ironman Hawaii World Champion 2017 and 2018. His conclusion: Aerothan is my first choice. On the one hand because, compared to conventional inner tires, there can be 100 grams per set of tires.
